Meditation
Most cases of stress related hair loss can be reversed. A simple treatment, meditation has shown to reduce stress in both men and women. In as little as five to ten minutes of mediation practiced daily can help to reset your emotions, calm your mind, and reduced stress levels, may even help to reduce hair loss.
Tips For Beginners:
Set aside time each day for practice - start small, in three to five minute increments
Focus on deep breathing
Stretch your muscles to begin the process of looking inward
Let thoughts simply float out of your mind and focus on your breathing
Meditation improves thought processes, increases energy, reduces stress and tension, and restores your hormonal balance. A recent study in the journal of Health Psychology demonstrated a link between increased mediation and decrease levels of the stress hormone cortisol.
Medications
Pharmaceuticals can come with a long list of side effects, including hair loss. Chemotherapy is the most well-known cause, but others include:
thyroid medications
some oral contraceptives
beta-blockers
anticonvulsants
antidepressants
anticoagulants
These medications affect people differently and may not cause hair loss in everyone.
Nutritional deficiencies:
Nutritional deficiencies can cause hair to fall out. Extreme diets that are too low in protein and certain vitamins, such as iron, can sometimes cause excessive hair shedding.
A person should see a doctor for a blood test to check if they have a nutritional deficiency that could be causing their hair to fall out.
A diet rich in the following nutrients may help prevent or slow hair loss:
Iron. This mineral is involved in DNA synthesis, including that of the DNA present in hair follicles. Too little iron can cause hair to stop growing or fall out
Zinc. This mineral is essential for protein synthesis and cell division, two processes needed for hair growth. As such, zinc deficiency may cause hair loss
Linoleic acid (LA) and alpha-linolenic acid (ALA). These essential fatty acids are required for hair growth and maintenance
Niacin (vitamin B3). This vitamin is necessary for keeping hair healthy. Alopecia, a condition in which hair falls out in small patches, is one possible symptom of niacin deficiency
Biotin (vitamin B7). Biotin is another B vitamin that, when deficient, may be linked to hair loss
vitamin D
vitamin B-12
vitamin C
vitamin A
copper
selenium
We all lose hair
Some hair loss is perfectly normal, as hair falls out after it completes the 2 to 6 year growth phase. You may notice loose hairs that have fallen out on your clothes or in your comb or hairbrush. The average person loses about 50 to 100 hairs per day. This is normal. What is not normal? Excessive hair loss in women may be apparent by the following: If your hair starts to fall out in clumps, especially when you brush or comb it or are in the shower, you should see your doctor. If you notice that you can see larger areas of your scalp or that your hair is thinning, see your dermatologist for diagnosis and treatment of your hair loss condition.
